We Carried a Watermelon
The John Fairchild and Nikki Finke of newsletters is back with a fresh batch of reads...and baby birds!
We’re here to reclaim the “women’s magazine.” Every week, two veteran editors read it ALL to bring you everything we believe women’s media should be: juicy yarns, big ideas, deeply personal essays, hot goss, and the odd shopping tip—aka, the full Spread. Plus: Original interviews, podcasts, and more. Come hungry!
Spreadqueens,
What, did you think we were going to leave you high and dry on the week’s best reads? As if! We’re back on a Thursday while still processing our Tuesday missive, in which we went toe to toe with Puck fashion columnist Lauren Sherman. Her Line Sheet newsletter, judging by your response, has become exactly what we said it was—a must read. You really dig her blazing confidence and main-character energy. “Lauren Sherman is the voice we’ve all craved,” Spreader Camilla rejoiced in the comments section. “She tells it like it is,” said Mary. From Jessie: “Don’t know how she does it all.” Strong agree, on all points. However, within seconds of pressing “publish,” we were fielding behind-the-scenes feedback from industry types who (rightly) point out Sherman is not the “only one” but rather one among a handful of talented millennial fashion reporters—including many we celebrate here on the regular, ranging from the New York Times’s Jessicas Iredale and Testa, to Cut writer turned Substacker
; the Washington Post’s Rachel Tashjian; Front Row’s ; WSJ’s Rory Satran; and Elle’s Veronique Hyland. (This is by no means a complete list.) Sherman herself told us that newsletters are “iterative,” and that it makes her a better reporter when her audience jumps in to correct her. So in the spirit of that, gentle readers—you are heard! And with your help, Spreadlandia sparkles brighter than ever. Now onto the reads….
