Be still my heart! My Holmes article tip in your fabulously addictive newsletter. Rachel Dodes is such an enjoyable writer.

Up up up with maximalism! I love a 1980s-ish house full of weird stuff from MacKenzie Childs and a mom in a silk Talbot's blouse serving up some Snackwell cookies. Total Home Alone vibes. Blond wood and white painted interiors with no stuff (no books!) are soul-killing. Where are we supposed to be, exactly? And what is happening there?

This week I'll admit to being utterly entranced by the batshit bonkers Ozy media meltdown (Ben Smith's coverage), with a brief detour for Bob Kolker's NYT mag piece on bad art friends--nice little prelude to a psychological thriller there (will a police report be next?). As for Ozy, let's keep an eye on what the smart and interesting Lauren Williams's Capital B, a new media company (non-profit) focused on Black communities. She launches next year--in January. Will there be juicy articles? I don't know. But I did enjoy her op-ed responding to the Ozy sitch: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/05/opinion/ozy-black-media-support.html

Rachel--you must tell us what Elizabeth's voice was like!! Did she stay in character the whole time?

Jen! The Kolker piece and response to it are so dizzying I'll be lying awake tonight trying to figure out how the Spread can best cover the whole episode—or will it be beyond stale next by next week? Hopefully I'll dream of the answer.

I too am closely watching the impending launch of Capital B—I am a huge fan of Williams's cofounder Akoto Ofor-Atta—and am looking forward to highlighting their work. I almost JUST CAN'T with the Ozy debacle; am waiting with baited breath for the definitive feature on the whole debacle...late this year?

One thing I'm still thinking through on the Kolker piece reaction is why so many responses both in the comments and in published think-pieces on it are pearl-clutchingly shocked/appalled/straight-up mad that Dorland apparently (I've yet to see actual evidence) pitched the piece to the NYT herself. Of all the things & several people to be appalled by in this piece, this one action strikes me as so pedestrian and minor. And totally unsurprising if true. So what's bugging people so much about the pitch? I have my theories.
