The Devil Wears Loafers
Highsnobiety’s ASME-shakin’ editor-in-chief Willa Bennett talks church and state, Gen Z journalism, and cribbing management tips from parenting books.
We’re here to reclaim the “women’s magazine.” Two veteran editors read it *all* to bring you everything we believe women’s media should be: juicy yarns, big ideas, deeply personal essays, hot goss, and the odd shopping tip—aka, the full Spread. Come hungry!
Grand Dames of Spreadingham Estate,
Not gonna lie, Willa Bennett hit our radar only recently, when she appeared in that Washington Post story on “the new millennial fashion editors.”1 Then, lo and behold, in April, there she was trotting off the dais of the National Magazine Awards clutching an Ellie for General Excellence between the usual Atlantic and New York Mag acceptance speeches. Obviously, we had to meet her.
Since then, the New York Times Style Section put her on its cover for “shaping the media landscape.” The Slate Culture Gabfest devoted a segment to Highsnobiety and the meta question, what even is a magazine these days?
Friends in the Conde Nast tower tell us they think of Willa as “the industry’s little sister.” Who better to star in our fourth podnership with Print is Dead (Long Live Print), where your Spreaditors get to sit down and talk mano a mano (a mano?) with mediaworld women we love?
Tune in to hear the media darling to watch explain how the “many-tentacled organism” or “beast” (it’s hard to describe) that is Highsnobiety works; why she’s a men’s magazine fanatic; her unlikely source of management insight; and what it’s like to be, basically, the coolest girl in New York. Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts.
Remind us what “drip” means again?

Such a fantastic conversation! Made me feel ancient, but love her verve for the industry and can't wait to see how she evolves. "Creative Collaborations as the New Sex" is a genius piece.
